SUMMARY This internship provides a current student of an accredited institution of higher education with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in government relations within a cultural heritage institution.
The Governmental Affairs Intern will play a crucial role in supporting governmental affairs and relations area at Toledo Museum of Art which includes the director’s office, philanthropy and institutional development, governmental relations.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Policy Research and Analysis: Conducts research on relevant cultural and historical policies, legislation, and governmental initiatives.
Summarizes complex information for easy comprehension for stakeholders and team members.
Analyzes the potential impact of proposed policies on the museum.
Legislative Monitoring: May be asked to review or track legislative developments and political activities related to cultural and heritage institutions.
May provide regular updates to the government relations team on significant policy changes or lobbying interactions, as requested.
Stakeholder Engagement: Assists in building and maintaining relationships with government officials, agencies, and advocacy groups relevant to the Museum's mission.
Coordinates meetings and briefings with policymakers and external stakeholders as directed.
Drafting and Editing: Assists in preparing policy briefs, position papers, and advocacy materials with a focus on cultural heritage.
Proofreads and edits documents to ensure accuracy and coherence.
Event Planning and Support: Assists in organizing events, briefings, and advocacy campaigns related to governmental relations and cultural heritage.
Assists with logistical coordination and event follow-up.
Other duties as assigned or required.
RELATIONSHIPS Reports to the Director of Belonging & Community Engagement.
Works closely with and may take direction from the Governmental Affairs team to include the Museum Director, Director of Belonging & Community Engagement, Director of Development, and Executive Assistant to the Director.
Works collaboratively with other members of other departments within the Museum.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Actively enrolled student of an accredited institution of higher education.
Previous experience in governmental relations, public administration, cultural policy, or related fields preferred.
Familiarity with cultural heritage legislation and policies preferred.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES Strong interest in government affairs, cultural policy, and advocacy within the museum context.
Ability to work a varied schedule to include some evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
Demonstrates a professional attitude and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Adept in general computer skills, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a cultural institution.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Standard open concept office work environment with related phone, computer and printer noise; position requires stamina to stand for periods of time and the ability to leverage technology including computer, printer and phone systems; the person in this position may be required to communicate with public and staff who have inquiries and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions when moving among buildings.
