*BETHANY HOUSE Position Description*
*~Shelter Advocate~*
*JOB TITLE:* *Shelter Advocate*
*SUPERVISED BY: *Associate Director
*CLASSIFICATION: *Non-Exempt; Part-time *PAY:* $13 base pay per hour
*NORMAL WORKING HOURS: *Shelter advocates will typically fill one or more shifts a week and/or fill-in shifts to cover staff absences.
Shifts run Monday through Friday, 5:00p/7:00pm-12midnight; Saturday and Sunday 9:00am to 2:00pm, 2:00pm-7:00pm, 7:00pm-12 midnight; and occasional weekday hours.
These hours will include rotating *holidays*.
We provide services on a twenty-four hour, seven days a week basis.
Flexibility is a key component of this position.
*JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:* 1) Uphold the mission and values of Bethany House, as well as the values of the Sisters of St.
Francis of Sylvania Ohio.
2) Provide specialized support to individual program participants and their children, and to community members who reach out by telephone 3) Be available to discuss current issues with program participants 4) Orient new program participants to Bethany House 5) Maintain building security and safety.
Complete safety checks of the facility at least once per shift and document any repairs needed 6) Assist with facilities upkeep, cleanliness, and maintenance.
Readying units for new participants 7) Communicate with lead Advocacy Staff regarding program participants and their needs 8) Display conflict resolution skills and promote problem-solving among program participants 9) Provide skills training to program participants including, but not limited to: organizational skills and cleaning 10) Intervene in a crisis according to protocols, including written follow-up 11) Ensure that program participants are aware of policies and procedures 12) Prepare and maintain all appropriate records and data collection systems.
13) Inform and assist program participants in filing victim’s compensation claims and accessing VINE.
14) Serve as a positive role-model for program participants.
15) Attend staff meetings and trainings.
16) Must complete 40 hour initial training and provide documentation of such to the E.
D.
and must complete a minimum of 8 hours of training per year.
17) Clerical and administrative duties may include answering calls on a multi-line telephone system; monitoring security; knowledge of copy machines, faxes, computers, printers etc.
18) Arrange for own substitutes to replace self if unable to work scheduled time.
Inform supervisor and document as appropriate.
19) Other duties as assigned by the Director.
*WORK ENVIRONMENT:* The work is performed primarily in an indoor setting.
Some driving is required.
There is possible exposure to communicable diseases, violent people and/or acts.
The noise level is usually moderate.
*QUALIFICATIONS:* * A High School Diploma or the equivalent is required.
Prefer an Associate’s degree or higher in social services or related field, OR comparable work experience in domestic violence, or equivalent combination of education and experience, previous experience working in a residential program preferred * Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of domestic violence victims and their children.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team with demonstrated maturity and professional judgment * Familiarity with community agencies and resources * Be able to lift 40 pounds and ability to climb stairs required * Proficiency in Microsoft Office software * Successful completion of a background screening * Must have and maintain a vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance *COMPETENCIES (OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES):* · Ability to communicate and work effectively with sensitivity and tact, with all people regardless of race, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, other types of cultural differences, and individuals with histories of substance abuse and/or mental illness · The ability to work independently and manage time effectively · Excellent oral and written skills · The ability to remain calm and work effectively under and manage stress · Demonstrated problem solving and conflict resolution skills · Ability to work from an empowerment model and a trauma-informed framework · Flexible, adaptable, and have the capability to work in a facility-based shelter environment Job Type: Part-time Pay: $13.
